Building Healthy Families: Handle With Care

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of being involved in a powerful program for building healthy families: Handle with Care. Through my previous employment with the First Nations Education Initiative Inc. (FNEII), I have seen the positive impact that this program has on parents, caregivers, and children firsthand.

Handle with Care is a strengths-based program building on the four building blocks of mental health in parents, caregivers, and children: building trust and attachment; building and enhancing self-esteem, expressing emotions, and building positive relationships with others. These concepts are communicated through activities, videos, and interactive discussions that encourage parents and caregivers to build on their strengths to support the mental health of their children. Self-care, while often neglected by parents and caregivers, is emphasized in each session because of the evidence showing that healthy parents are more capable of supporting the mental health of their children.

Since the work with FNEII, we have assisted the Atlantic Coordinators of the national program in connecting with the Gagetown Military Family Resource Centre in Oromocto, the Turning Leaf Foundation, and the Fredericton Family Resource Centre. We have also been involved as a part of a team in developing the promotional video below, which explains the program and shows its positive impact on parents, caregivers, and children.

Agape Counselling is excited to be a National Partner with the Handle with Care program, and we look forward to the future of building healthy families! Feel free to contact us for more information.
